Infrasound

An 8-element infrasound array located on the Ross Ice Shelf, south of Ross Island. The I55US infrasound array was installed in 2001 on the flat, featureless Ross Ice Shelf but is sheltered from prevailing winds by the terrain that forms Ross Island 20 km to the north. The array experiences 1-2m of snowfall annually and temperatures between -50F and +30F. It is powered by solar panels during the Antarctic summer and by an on-site diesel generator during the Antarctic winter months.
